Alcoholism is a disorder that is most likely to occur among those whose family members are also suffering from the disorder. Researches prove that individuals whose parents are alcoholic drinkers are more likely to fall to the same disease. This does not suggest, though, that alcoholism is practically genetic in nature. This does not also mean that offsprings of alcoholic parents generally turns out to be alcoholic in the future. The fact is, alcoholism is a result of many and varied forces.
Genetic factors increase the risks of alcoholism. The risk for developing the disease further increases when parents exhibit depression and psychological problems, when both parents use alcohol, and when the parents’ alcohol abuse is severe.
Alcoholism, a disease characterized by a strong compulsion to use alcohol, need not happen to any one. Health professionals from various alcohol addiction treatment centers advise many to avoid alcoholism and its aftermath. These professionals strongly discourage alcohol drinking especially among the underage. Adults are encouraged to drink in moderation, whether alcoholism runs in their family or not. Some people such as those who are pregnant and recovering alcoholics are also barred from drinking alcoholic beverages. Individuals who are on medications as well as those with certain medical conditions are also discouraged from alcoholic drinking.
