When looking at how people use and choose substances, there is no doubt that it varies. This variation attributes to the different types of alcoholics and addicts out there in the world. Some may be incognito as a result of their decision, while others will be incredibly apparent. One thing is for sure, though, that not every addict or alcoholic is homeless or living on the side of the freeway. Even when it comes down to using “hard” substances, there is no one particular kind of image to attribute to, say, a crack addict.
But, it is possible that a particular drug will dictate certain types of behaviors. For example, it is incredibly unlikely that a marijuana addict will go to the same lengths to stay high as a meth addict. Also, age and socioeconomic status will come into play. There is the infamous tale of the housewife who is overly board and takes to prescription bills to quell her need for entertainment. If this is the case, her vicodin addiction will not look at all close to the cocaine addict; who thinks they are the life of the party. So, in theory, drug use does not obligate someone into debauchery. The general public often forgets this, when they classify and judge alcoholics and addicts.
Also, it is important to note the certain drugs and drinks do not go out of style. Just because they no longer appear popular does not mean that people are not using them in as great of numbers as before. This also doesn’t mean that they are not available to the youth of the nation, which is the truly scary part. The last thing a parent wants is to see their young son deal with crystal meth drug abuse and requiring treatment.
