Eating Disorders Defined

Eating disorders are to be considered as serious illnesses that require immediate treatment from health professionals. These eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. Each of these has its own characteristics and needs particular treatment procedure.

Anorexia is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight regardless of being practically underweight. Persons suffering from anorexia would deprive themselves of food and starve themselves so as not to gain more weight. When they eat, these individuals would indulge in purging or throwing up in order to avoid getting more pounds.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by eating large amounts of food followed by drastic measures such as purging, taking laxatives and diuretics and engaging in too much exercise in order to avoid gaining more weight.  Individuals suffering from bulimia have unhealthy attitude and feeling about their weight.

Those who have binge eating disorders have strong tendencies to consume large amounts of food within short periods of time otherwise known as binger periods. Bingeing is later followed by purging or throwing up in order to avoid gaining more weight. Those with binge eating disorders usually take laxatives and diuretics, and would engage in excessive exercises in order to shed off fats and weight.

Eating disorders are serious disorders that should not be taken lightly. Any of these can possibly lead to various health complications and may even cause unexpected death.
